Hammerhead VR were commissioned to conceive and produce a bold Oculus Rift and mobile VR experience for global agency AMV BBDOs client, Thunderhead, the cloud-based customer engagement platform, which became the must see event at the Festival of Marketing 2015.

Building on the creative concept by AMV BBDO that introduced ‘The Thunderhead’ character, the VR experience ‘Above the Clouds’ is a stunning sci-fi experience that puts you at the helm of Thunderhead’s spaceship in a futuristic Norse world.

It’s a brand experience unlike any other, as you fly through stormy clouds and past the towers of Asgard towards a data-charged giant, on a journey learning about the benefits of Thunderhead’s technology and how this allows marketers to listen, understand, act and learn about individual customers.

RIDING THE STORM

We developed the experience in Unreal Engine (UE4), and cracked several technical and complex challenges. In particular mastering new techniques to create realistic clouds and translucent materials in UE4, and developing new and efficient approaches to implementing the core reactor, and lightning systems. To our knowledge we have created an approach to producing realistic clouds that is yet to be bettered and in such a way the is very efficient on the engine.

GUARANTEED PERFORMANCE

We ensured performance in the field by benchmarking different PC specifications and using bespoke units to provide the power and reliability needed for the high visitor volumes expected at the Festival of Marketing. The hardware and application were extensively stress-tested at various stages throughout the project and as part of the event set-up.

Hammerhead also organised and installed the hardware for the VR experience, including the PCs, DK2’s, and headphones, while also providing onsite engineer support and the ability to remotely manage the PC’s in real-time. This ensured any issues could be also quickly addressed back in the studio, if required.
